Warmth is a flow, not a state. It needs feeding.
The reason volume governs the decision is that IP reputation is not a thing you achieve and keep — it is a thing you maintain by continuing to send. This is why both total volume and consistency matter, and why consistency is the half people forget. A sender with adequate monthly volume delivered in a few big bursts can still struggle on a dedicated IP, because the gaps between sends let the IP cool, so every campaign half-restarts the warming process. The same volume spread evenly across the month keeps the IP continuously warm and performs far better. The question is not only "how much do you send" but "how steadily" — an IP wants a heartbeat, not occasional floods.
The rough thresholds people cite — figures around several thousand emails a day, or the high tens of thousands a month, as a floor for dedicated — are really proxies for this underlying requirement. They are estimates of how much steady volume it takes to keep providers seeing a continuous, trustworthy signal from one address. Treat them as orientation rather than law: the real test is whether your sending can keep an IP's reputation continuously fed, and if it cannot, a shared pool that borrows everyone else's heartbeat is the better home for your mail. For the established, higher-volume sender, dedicated is the stronger position — and the responsibility that comes with it is manageable at that scale.
Choose shared when your volume is low or variable, you are early and still growing, or you do not have the resources to warm and manage a dedicated IP properly. A reputable shared pool with good sender vetting will usually deliver your mail better than a half-warm dedicated IP would, because it lends you the collective warmth of steady senders. There is no shame in shared; for a large share of senders it is simply the correct engineering choice, and moving to dedicated before you have the volume is a downgrade dressed as an upgrade.
The honest framing is that this is a threshold you cross as you grow, not a quality tier you buy into. Warm it, separate streams, and keep it fed.
Once dedicated is the right call, running it well is mostly three disciplines. The second is stream separation, which is much of why senders want dedicated in the first place.
