What is IP warming?
The process of gradually ramping volume on a new sending IP so providers learn to trust it. Skip it and a new IP looks like a spammer. Here's why it's necessary and how it works.

IP warming is the process of gradually increasing the volume of mail sent from a new dedicated IP over a period of weeks, so that mailbox providers build trust in it before it carries full volume. A brand-new IP has no reputation at all, and a sudden flood of mail from an unknown address looks exactly like a spammer — so warming eases the IP into service at a pace receivers accept.
Without warming, a new IP sending high volume immediately gets throttled, filtered, or blocked, because receivers have no history to justify trusting it. Why warming is necessary
Mailbox providers decide how much mail to accept from an IP based on its history, and a new IP has none. Faced with a sudden large volume from an unknown address, a receiver's safest assumption is that it's a spam source, so it throttles or blocks the mail. Warming solves this by starting with a small volume to your most engaged recipients — the people most likely to open and least likely to complain — and increasing it gradually as the IP accumulates a positive track record. Each day of clean sending at a given volume earns the trust to send a bit more the next.
How a warming schedule works
A warming schedule ramps volume over roughly two to six weeks, starting low and increasing each day, with the exact curve depending on your target volume and how engaged your list is. The principle is to send to your best recipients first — recent, active, engaged contacts whose positive signals build reputation fastest — and to watch the feedback closely, slowing the ramp if soft bounces or complaints start rising. Warming isn't a fixed recipe; it's a controlled process that responds to how receivers are reacting, which is why it benefits from the monitoring and adjustment that experienced operation provides.
What breaks a warming
The fastest way to ruin a warming is to rush it. Pushing volume up faster than the schedule, sending to a stale or unengaged list, or ignoring the early warning signs — rising soft bounces, complaints, or deferrals — undoes the trust the ramp is meant to build, and a botched warming can leave an IP with a worse standing than it started with. Sending to spam traps during warming is especially damaging, because a fresh IP has no reputation buffer to absorb the hit. The discipline that makes warming succeed is patience plus attention: ramp only as fast as the feedback allows, send only to recipients who want the mail, and treat the first sign of trouble as a reason to slow down rather than push through.

Warming has traditionally focused on the IP, but domain reputation increasingly matters as much or more, and it needs warming too. A brand-new sending domain, like a new IP, has no track record, and ramping volume gradually lets receivers build trust in the domain as well as the address. Because domain reputation follows you across IP changes, warming the domain carefully is an investment that outlasts any single IP — which is why a thorough warming considers both, establishing the domain's standing alongside the IP's. Senders who warm only the IP and neglect the domain often find their reputation more fragile than they expected.

Warming is often described with fixed schedules — so many messages on day one, doubling every few days — but the schedules are starting points, not recipes.
